Abstract

The main purpose of the study is to examine the predictive power of the university students’ irrational thought and rumination levels to their anxiety levels. Whether this predictability differs according to the gender, classes and department of the students is determined as the sub-goal of the research. The data obtained by using the Personal Information Form, the Ruminational Scale, the Irrational Beliefs Scale Short Form and the Beck Anxiety Scale to 434 volunteer undergraduate students studying at the Faculty of Education of Ankara University. Analysed by multiple regression analysis. According to the results of the analysis, irrational thoughts cannot predict the level of anxiety but ruminational thoughts are predicting anxiety. This predictability varies by gender, department, and class level. The results obtained will help the counseling process of school psychological counselors.
