A French Teacher Training Model: A Case of Macedonia

Abstract


This study aims to compare the French teacher training models in Macedonia and Turkey and present evaluation findings of these models as a result of this comparison. Two very different substantial teacher-training models; Hacettepe University, French Language Teaching Undergraduate Degree Program in Ankara and Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, French Teaching program in Skopje were compared in terms of quantity and quality, and the obtained data were interpreted in this regard. According to the accessed data of this comparative study focusing on the place of French as a foreign language in both countries, on their teacher training systems and on the content of the subjects of the curriculum, French teacher in Turkish model is particularly graduated better equipped in terms of professional knowledge and general culture. Quantity and quality of occupation lessons as it remains very limited in Macedonian sample, we observed that French teacher candidates take the courses that have a predominantly linguistic and literary content. We also observed that Macedonian French teacher candidates, in terms of their professional knowledge, stayed behind of their future colleagues in Turkey. Whereas, compared with Turkey, Macedonia's French teacher candidates, having a higher level in French at the beginning of their education, are able to get more chances of employment in the public schools with less professional knowledge than their Turkish colleagues.
